Question:
I have just taken out my hair extensions and my hair is very thin and damaged. What hair products are the best to use? I am currently using Kerastase age recharge. from Elizabeth Crichton
Answer:
I had hair extensions for a little over a year. I went to Atlantis Hair in Paddington to have them put in because they use Amore Extension, the best quality brand made from 100% European hair. They are attached section by section with a tiny clamp, so almost undetectable. No one ever guessed I had them because I had long hair to start with but they made my hair incredibly thick. The Kerastase Age Recharge is ideal to use to help strengthen your hair but there are also other steps you need to take to get your hair back to it’s original condition. When it was time to have my extensions taken out, Alan Buki, creative Director at Atlantis gave me the following advice:
“The most important thing to do when your extensions come out, is cut the ends of your hair, as the ends are usually thin and wispy looking. When your hair has not been cut in a long time it can actually looks thinner than it is. Have a cut with a blunt edge, keeping as much length as possible and have solid long layers. This will create thickness in your hair whilst keeping shape in the style.
Regular treatments are vital for rebuilding hair after extensions, feed the hair with protein and moisture, and choose something that is nourishing but still light enough so as not to weigh the hair down. It will take about 6 weeks for you to start seeing a real improvement in your hair. Hair repairs itself like skin, use a natural bristle brush such as a Mason and Pearson, this will help to get the oils from the scalp through the hair.
Remember, you are what you eat and your hair is an extremity and it needs good hair foods such as avocado, chicken, fish, eggs, beans and yoghurt. Soy protein has also been found to be helpful in stimulating hair growth.
Finally avoid heat styling as much as you can, but if you have to blow dry, go for a thickening spritz, this will protect the hair and add volume, body and shape."
